3D Artist & VFX Creator

Nicolas Drum

Freelance 3D artist and VFX creator based in Saarbrücken, Germany. I specialise in food CGI, product visualisation, and 3D scanning — built around a Houdini-first pipeline that I've been developing and refining for years. When I'm not working on client projects I'm scanning food, building tools, or making tutorials for my YouTube channel.

First Creative Spark
Age 13. Started drawing — the first sign of an urge to make and create things visually. The medium didn't stick forever, but the impulse behind it absolutely did.
Milestone
First Digital Tools
Picked up a Wacom tablet and dived into Photoshop and Procreate. The creative work goes digital.

Deep Dive Into Photography
Got seriously into photography — less about casually taking photos, more an obsession with understanding cameras, lenses, and light from the ground up. First camera was a used Sony A7R II. The technical side of optics and image capture became a foundation that still informs how I approach rendering and CGI today.
Personal Project
First Real Film Work
Volunteered to shoot and edit an image video for Tiergestützte Heilerziehung — a therapeutic farm helping people in addiction recovery. First time I used film as something that actually mattered beyond myself.

First Freelance Gig — Training Video Editor
Founded a side business and cut educational videos for a personal trainer certification academy. First money from a camera-related skill.
Work
April 2021 — 2 Weeks
Internship at Filmwerk Köln
Two weeks inside a professional film production environment in Cologne. First real look at how things work behind the camera on a commercial level.

1.8M Views — Then I Deleted Everything
Set myself a challenge: post one short video every day and finally start building something on social media. Started with day trips through Cologne, then everyday life content. A short of me changing tires on my VW Polo went viral — 1.8 million views.

Months later, I deleted the whole channel. If I kept going, the audience would be built around content I didn't care about. Took the hit deliberately and started over with a topic that actually mattered to me.

Ausbildung — Mediengestalter Bild & Ton
Started formal training at M&R Kreativ in Saarbrücken. Within weeks I was doing motion graphics daily in After Effects and cutting in Premiere constantly. It clicked instantly.

November 2021
YouTube Channel — Motion & Effects Tutorials
Started posting tutorials on After Effects tricks and motion effects in the evenings — topics I actually cared about. The deliberate restart after deleting the viral channel.

Milestone
Finding Houdini — And Not Looking Back
Started with Cinema 4D chasing better simulation tools, but its pricing model — nearly 835 EUR/year — made serious commercial work impractical from the start. Houdini was the answer. The node-based layout, the depth of its simulation tools, the customisability, the Indie licence pricing — everything clicked immediately. C4D got uninstalled. Houdini stayed, and has been the centre of everything since.

Esther Bejarano Film Festival — 3rd Place
Co-created a 2D animated short with fellow trainee Oliver Paul for the Holocaust remembrance festival in Saarbrücken. The film followed a spoon — a real family heirloom — carried across borders during wartime and eventually passed down to her children.

Rebelway — Advanced Studio Workflows
Completed Rebelway's advanced Houdini course in the evenings alongside my Ausbildung. Learned to build custom HDAs, design proper pipeline tools, and approach complex simulations with performance in mind.

Top 25 — International Render Challenge
Entered a major international render challenge in the evenings alongside my Ausbildung. Combined a Houdini RBD car crash simulation with Unreal Engine 5 and landed in the Top 25 worldwide.

Abschluss — Mediengestalter Bild & Ton
Successfully completed my apprenticeship as a Mediengestalter Bild und Ton (Media Designer for Image and Sound) — a three-year dual-education programme combining hands-on professional work with formal vocational school. The final exams cover a written concept proposal, film theory, and a full practical project: shoot, cut, and deliver a finished production to brief. Passed with 85 points in the apprenticeship exams.

Houdini TD — First Industry Role
Landed a Houdini TD position at an advertising agency straight out of training. The studio had to cut drastically right as I arrived — before I could touch a single project. I assembled my desk, and then almost everyone was let go. Back on the market before the week was out.

RBD Work for a US Music Video
A US studio found me on YouTube and brought me on for RBD simulations on a major music video production. My first significant international freelance project — and eventually led to more.
Work
Oktober 2024 — Dezember 2025
Saarländischer Rundfunk — Graphics & Motion Design
Won a 1-year contract in the graphics and motion design department of the SR after starting as a freelance cutter. Public broadcasting, real deadlines, real output — every day.
Personal Project
December 2024 — July 2025
"The Boys" — A-Train VFX Recreation
Organised a full shoot with friends as crew and actors. Spent half a year filming, simulating FX, cutting, and compositing a recreation of the iconic A-Train shot from The Boys Season 1 — the superhero, not the vehicle.

100 Foods — 3D Scan Library
Launched an ongoing series of high-quality food scans: photographed, photogrammetry-processed in RealityCapture, retopologised in Houdini, and retextured in Substance Painter. 30+ assets and growing — almost all available for free. Built a custom Houdini Asset Manager to go with it.

Bouldering
Recently picked up bouldering and immediately hooked. Before COVID I was going to the gym for weights 5 days a week for 5 years — that habit faded and hasn't fully come back. Bouldering feels like the right way in again.
🎮
Dota 2
The one game that stuck. Everything else came and went — Dota stayed. Has been for years and will probably continue to be.

Pescatarian
Going on 5 years now. Cut out meat because I care about animals — simple as that. No beef, no chicken, no pork. Fish occasionally, not much more than that.

Own Creative Projects on Social Media
Long-term the goal is building something of my own — series, channels, formats that I actually care about. Not as a side thing. As the main thing.
🌊
Live by the Sea. Near Mountains.
Ideally both. Somewhere like Norway — coast, fjords, mountains within reach. The landscape matters as much as the work.
